Varanasi sight seeing

Kashi Vishwanath Temple
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the holiest Shiva temple in India. Mangala Aarti 3–4 AM, Bhog Aarti 11:30 AM, Sandhya Aarti around 7 PM. Phones and bags are not permitted inside.
Ganga Aarti, Dashashwamedh Ghat
The grand choreographed aarti begins around 6:45 PM and runs about 45 minutes. Devotees arrive an hour early for a good seat, or watch from a boat on the water.
Sarnath
Thirteen kilometres away, where the Buddha gave his first sermon. Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka pillar, the monastery ruins and the museum holding the original Lion Capital. Closed Fridays.
Banaras Hindu University
Founded in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and one of Asia’s largest residential campuses, with the New Vishwanath Temple at its centre and Bharat Kala Bhavan museum nearby.
Assi Ghat & sunrise boat ride
Subah-e-Banaras opens the day with music and yoga at first light. A 5:30 AM pickup gets you there in time for the boat ride past the ghats in the best light of the day.
Sankat Mochan Temple
Founded by Tulsidas, and the rare temple where Hanuman faces his Lord Rama. Tuesdays and Saturdays are busiest, and the besan ke laddoo sold as prasad is worth the queue.
Tulsi Manas Mandir
A white marble shikhara temple built in 1964, its walls engraved with verses from the Ram Charit Manas. Tulsidas is said to have written the epic on this very spot.
Durga Temple & Durga Kund
An 18th-century Nagara-style temple washed in ochre red, beside a stepped tank that once fed directly from the river. At its most alive during Navratri.
Bharat Mata Temple
Built in 1936 in the Kashi Vidyapith campus and dedicated not to a deity but to India itself — a vast marble relief map of the undivided subcontinent, carved to scale.
Manikarnika Ghat
The cremation ghats, burning without pause for centuries — the reason many pilgrims come to Kashi at all. Photography is not permitted; we brief you on visiting respectfully.
Ramnagar Fort
The 18th-century sandstone seat of the Maharaja of Banaras across the river, with a museum of vintage cars, palanquins, weapons and an astronomical clock from 1852.
Panchganga Ghat
Where five rivers are said to meet. The Alamgir Mosque rises above it, forming the most recognisable silhouette on the northern stretch of the riverfront.

Vindhyachal
78 km each way. The Trikon Darshan of Maa Vindhyavasini, Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja temples above the Ganga at Mirzapur, with Sita Kund on the return.
Ayodhya — Ram Janmabhoomi
210 km each way via Sultanpur. Ram Mandir darshan, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the evening aarti at Saryu Ghat.
Prayagraj — Triveni Sangam
125 km each way. Boat and snan where the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati meet, then Bade Hanuman Mandir, Akshayavat and Anand Bhawan.
Bodhgaya
Where Buddhism began. The Mahabodhi Temple and Bodhi tree, the 80-foot Great Buddha statue, and the Thai, Japanese and Bhutanese monasteries.
Gaya — Vishnupad
Vishnupad Temple, the Falgu river ghats, Mangla Gauri and Akshayavat. We handle the Pitru Paksha rush and can arrange a pandit for the rituals.
Chunar Fort
Established by Maharaja Vikramaditya of Ujjain, this hilltop fort above the Ganga carries Mughal, Nawabi and British layers. An easy half-day from the city.
Mathura & Vrindavan
Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON, Krishna Janmabhoomi, Barsana and Gokul — one of the most sacred lands in India, about 150 km from Delhi.
Agra — Taj Mahal
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, then Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daula and Mehtab Bagh. Usually added on to the Braj Bhoomi circuit.
Chitrakoot
Ramghat, the Kamadgiri parikrama, Hanuman Dhara, Gupt Godavari caves and Bharat Milap — the forest where the Ramayana slows down.
Maihar — Ma Sharda Devi
1,063 steps up Trikoot hill to Maa Sharda Devi, goddess of learning. The warrior Alha is still believed to offer the first prayer each morning. A ropeway runs too.
Khajuraho
The Chandela temple complex and its Western, Eastern and Southern groups, with the Panna tiger reserve close by for a day in the forest.
Ujjain — Mahakaleshwar
The Bhasma Aarti, held only at Mahakaleshwar among all twelve Jyotirlingas, must be booked in advance. Kal Bhairav and Ram Ghat complete the darshan.
Lucknow
Bara Imambara and its bhool bhulaiya, Rumi Darwaza, Chota Imambara and the Residency, finished with an evening of Awadhi food in Chowk.
Haridwar
An ancient town on the Ganga at the edge of Uttarakhand. Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, with Rishikesh close by.
Kedarnath
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, in the lap of the Garhwal Himalaya about 221 km from Rishikesh, against the backdrop of the Kedarnath range.
Badrinath
Badrinath darshan and Tapt Kund, Mana village at the last Indian outpost before Tibet, and Auli on the way back down.
